Police Recover Vehicles Stolen from Nigeria to Ghana and Niger, Arrest Three Suspects in Ghana
The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major success in its clampdown on transnational criminal activities as several vehicles stolen in Nigeria and trafficked across borders have been recovered through international cooperation, with three suspects arrested in Ghana.
The breakthrough was made possible by the operatives of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja, in collaboration with INTERPOL NCB Accra and Niamey. The recovered vehicles include those stolen from Federal Government agencies and smuggled into Ghana and Niger Republic.
One of the recovered vehicles, a 2020 Toyota Prado belonging to a Federal Government agency, was stolen during a robbery in Abuja. It was traced and recovered in Accra, Ghana, where three suspects were apprehended. The suspects have since been arraigned in court in Ghana, and the vehicle has been returned to Nigeria and handed over to the concerned agency.
Similarly, a Toyota Hilux (2018 model) stolen from a government staff in the Utako District of Abuja on October 18, 2024, was recovered in Agadez, Niger Republic. Following coordinated efforts with INTERPOL NCB Niamey, the vehicle was officially returned through the Nigeria-Niger border at Ilela/Konni and received by a senior official of the agency.
In a related development, the Nigeria Police is concluding the recovery and repatriation of two additional vehicles—a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV and a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV—both stolen from their owners in Abuja in May 2025 and later sold in Niamey, Niger Republic.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, commended the professionalism and coordination of the officers involved and reaffirmed the NPF’s unwavering commitment to strengthening global policing through technology, intelligence-sharing, and international collaboration. He also appreciated the vital support of INTERPOL NCB Accra, INTERPOL NCB Niamey, and the Nigerian High Commission in Accra for facilitating the recoveries.
He urged Nigerians to register their vehicles on the Nigeria Police electronic platforms to increase the likelihood of swift recovery in the event of theft.
