Lagos State Traffic Management Authority’s Commitment to Smooth Journeys During Protests: Insights from Mr. Bakare Oki Olalekan

In a recent interview, Mr. Bakare Oki Olalekan, Managing Director of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), shed light on the challenges and strategies involved in managing traffic during recent protests in Lagos State. Despite the complexities, LASTMA remained steadfast in its mission to ensure public safety and maintain seamless traffic flow.

Mr. Olalekan emphasized the importance of keeping the public informed about road conditions before they leave their homes. Through social media channels, LASTMA provides timely updates, helping drivers plan their journeys and avoid potential delays. “We are on the road to make sure that everyone has a smooth and seamless journey,” he stated, highlighting the organization’s commitment to facilitating efficient transportation.

During the protests, LASTMA faced a unique set of challenges. While many areas remained calm and experienced minimal traffic, some construction zones and areas with ongoing group activities posed difficulties. In response, LASTMA deployed traffic equipment and personnel to these hotspots, ensuring that traffic was properly channeled, redirected, and controlled.

One notable aspect of LASTMA’s efforts during the protests was their quick response to vehicle breakdowns. “We recorded about two or three breakdowns, and we addressed them promptly,” Mr. Olalekan said. This swift action aligns with LASTMA’s core responsibility of ensuring the smooth movement of vehicles, goods, and services, which is crucial for stimulating economic activities and enhancing safety on Lagos roads.

However, Mr. Olalekan acknowledged the challenges posed by the behavior of some road users. He noted that impatience and lack of mental alertness among drivers often lead to risky situations. “People should always maintain a level of mental sanity when driving,” he urged, emphasizing the importance of safety for all road users. He also stressed the need for regular vehicle checks, particularly in the morning before starting journeys, to ensure roadworthiness.

In conclusion, Mr. Olalekan reaffirmed LASTMA’s commitment to overcoming these challenges and continuously improving traffic management in Lagos. Through strategic measures and a focus on public safety, LASTMA aims to provide a safer and more efficient road experience for all.
