LASG Warns Motorists on Persistent BRT Lane Violations, 488 Vehicles Impounded

The Lagos State Government has issued a firm warning to all motorists, both private and commercial, urging them to desist from violating Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes across the state. This comes in the wake of a large-scale enforcement action by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), which saw 488 vehicles impounded between January and August 2024 for illegally using BRT lanes.

According to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment at LASTMA, all offenders have been charged to the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecution. Motorists, particularly along the Abule-Egba BRT corridor, have been strongly advised to cease further infractions following extensive road rehabilitation from Abule-Egba to Iyana-Ipaja. The improvements have rendered any use of the BRT lanes by unauthorized vehicles unnecessary and punishable.

LASTMA highlighted that the 488 vehicles were seized at key locations, including Ikorodu, Maryland, Anthony, Apongbon, Ojuelegba, Oyingbo, and along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway. 

The government reaffirms its commitment to enhancing road infrastructure for public benefit but stresses that the cooperation of all road users is essential for maintaining traffic order and safety. Motorists found flouting the BRT lane rules will face legal consequences. 

Motorists are called upon to exercise patience and discipline, ensuring a smoother traffic flow for all.
