Justice for Simi Gold: National Cybercrime Center Nabs Notorious Impostor Preying on Young Nigerian Women Through Online Fraud
In a dramatic breakthrough that underscores the growing threat of cybercrime in Nigeria, the National Cybercrime Center Lagos Annex of the Nigeria Police Force has apprehended a notorious fraudster, Lawrence Oyedokun Femi, for impersonating popular influencer and entrepreneur, Simi Gold, in a complex online scam that targeted unsuspecting Nigerians particularly young women seeking financial independence and employment.
The arrest came after months of anguish, repeated petitions, and online outcry from Simi Gold, who had consistently debunked the fraudulent activities linked to her name and warned the public about the impersonator. Despite her efforts, the scammer continued to exploit her image and reputation, operating across social media platforms and deceiving victims with fake business deals, job offers, and investment opportunities.
The turning point came when a detailed petition was submitted to the National Cybercrime Center, prompting a thorough investigation. Prior to this, Simi Gold had filed complaints with several investigative agencies without result. In a disturbing twist, she was even mistakenly arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) following a petition from an oil and gas investor who believed she had defrauded them of millions of naira.
“This wasn’t just about identity theft,” a senior cybercrime officer stated. “It was about systematic exploitation. The suspect impersonated Simi Gold to defraud, manipulate, and abuse innocent Nigerians, especially young, vulnerable girls searching for work or business opportunities.”
After extensive surveillance, the cybercrime team tracked and arrested Lawrence Femi in Ilesha, Osun State. During interrogation, he confessed to the crimes and admitted to operating multiple fake social media accounts to impersonate Simi Gold and carry out fraudulent activities.
The investigation is still ongoing, as authorities seek to identify accomplices, financial beneficiaries, and victims of the scheme. Police sources have vowed to unravel the full network behind the scam.
“We want to make it clear: this is just the beginning. We are coming for anyone exploiting Nigerians online. We will not rest until the digital space is made safe for honest citizens,” the police stated firmly.
Simi Gold, who had been publicly crying out for justice while battling false accusations and public humiliation, may expressed deep relief and gratitude upon hearing of the suspect’s arrest.
This case serves as a critical reminder of the dangers of digital impersonation, and the urgent need for individuals to verify identities and engage responsibly online. It also exposes the gaps in cybercrime response and the importance of collaborative investigation.
The Nigeria Police has reiterated its commitment to pursuing all cybercriminals, stressing that anyone involved in internet fraud, identity theft, or digital manipulation will face the full weight of the law.
Lawrence Oyedokun Femi will be charged under the Cybercrimes Act of 2015, facing counts including identity theft, defamation, obtaining by false pretense, and cyberstalking.
