In a surprising turn of events, military regimes in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger have officially declared their departure from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), citing it as a “sovereign decision.” This decision, made public in a joint statement on Sunday, underscores the strained relationship between the Sahel nations and ECOWAS, aggravated by recent coups in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.

The trio, grappling with the dual challenges of jihadist violence and poverty, had faced suspension from ECOWAS, with Niger and Mali bearing heavy sanctions. Over the past months, the three nations solidified their stance, forming an “Alliance of Sahel States” in a show of unity against perceived external interference.
