Akpabio Drags Senator to Court Over Satirical Video Apology

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has filed a fresh legal action at the Federal High Court in Abuja against the suspended Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, seeking the removal of a satirical video apology she posted online.

The video, shared on April 27, features Akpoti-Uduaghan offering a sarcastic apology to Akpabio over allegations of sexual harassment. In the clip, she mockingly said she was “sorry for the crime of maintaining dignity and self-respect,” a statement widely interpreted as a critique of the Senate President’s perceived entitlement and conduct.

This latest legal move stems from an ongoing feud between the two senators that erupted following a confrontation on the Senate floor over seating arrangements. The tension escalated when Akpoti-Uduaghan publicly accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, a development that ultimately led to her suspension from the Senate.

In an earlier ruling on April 4, 2025, Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court had ordered both parties to refrain from making public statements related to the matter. However, Akpoti-Uduaghan’s satirical video, posted weeks after the court’s directive, has been deemed a violation of that order by Akpabio’s legal team.

Led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria Kehinde Ogunwumiju, Akpabio’s lawyers have filed a formal application urging the court to compel Akpoti-Uduaghan to delete the video from all social media platforms. In addition, they are asking the court to mandate her to issue a formal written apology, published in at least two national newspapers, and to submit a sworn affidavit confirming her compliance with the court’s orders.
