The Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ) has announced that the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, will headline the institution’s 7th Convocation Lecture, scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025.

This was made known at a press conference held at the institution’s main campus in Lagos, where the Provost, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye, addressed members of the press, including representatives of Societal Concerns Media. Mr. Adefaye was joined by the Registrar, Mrs. Patricia Kalesanwo, Dr. Boye Ola, and other members of the NIJ management team.

Mr. Adeniyi, who is a respected figure in public service and a former Vice President and Council member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), will deliver the lecture themed “AI and Public Governance”. The lecture will take place at the Sir Kesington Adebukunola Adebutu Media Resource Centre and is expected to draw a distinguished audience of academics, government officials, media professionals, and members of the business community.

The convocation lecture will set the stage for the main convocation ceremony on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, where 707 graduands will receive their certificates across various programmes: National Diploma (ND), Higher National Diploma (HND), and Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD). Among the graduands, 60 are graduating with Distinction grades, while others achieved Upper Credit, Lower Credit, and Pass classifications.

Chairman of the NIJ Governing Council and veteran journalist, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, CFR, will preside over the academic ceremonies, reinforcing the institution’s legacy as Nigeria’s premier media training centre.

Established in 1973 and restructured in 2004, NIJ remains a flagship institution for journalism and media training in Nigeria. It is backed by major industry bodies, including the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Newspapers Proprietors Association of Nigeria (NPAN), NIPR, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), and the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON).

According to the NIJ Public Relations Officer, Tolulope Ojemuyiwa, the event signifies the institute’s continued dedication to excellence in media education and its evolving role in addressing contemporary challenges in governance and communication through thought leadership.
