LASTMA Issues Stern Warning to ‘Korope’ Drivers Over Route Violations, Illegal Parking in Lagos
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has issued a firm warning to commercial bus operators, particularly drivers of mini-buses popularly known as ‘Korope,’ over persistent violations of traffic rules, including illegal route usage and indiscriminate parking on public roads.
In a press statement released by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, LASTMA declared its renewed commitment to clamping down on all forms of traffic misconduct that contribute to congestion and endanger road users across the metropolis.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, while addressing the issue, stressed the need for all ‘Korope’ operators to desist immediately from plying unauthorized routes. He warned that violators will face strict legal consequences as the state intensifies efforts to restore order on its roads.
“Illegal parking and flagrant route violations have metamorphosed into a grave menace in Lagos, particularly due to the arbitrary conduct of mini-bus operators. Such transgressions, which impede traffic fluidity and endanger public safety, will no longer be condoned,” Hon. Giwa stated.
He added that LASTMA personnel have been directed to adopt stricter enforcement measures to tackle reckless driving, unlawful parking, and other disruptive behaviors that threaten the city’s transportation framework.
According to the directive, all commercial vehicles must restrict operations to designated bus stops and terminals. Unauthorized loading and offloading on public roads will henceforth attract penalties.
Hon. Giwa also emphasized the security implications of unrestricted route deviations, stating that adherence to approved corridors helps prevent criminal exploitation of commercial vehicles.
“Strict adherence to designated routes is imperative for security purposes, as it acts as a deterrent against unscrupulous elements who exploit commercial vehicles, particularly ‘Korope,’ for illicit activities,” he said.
LASTMA has urged all commercial drivers and transport operators to support the state’s efforts by complying with traffic laws and cooperating with enforcement officers.
