Initially met with skepticism due to its announcement on April 1st, many assumed the policy was an April Fools’ prank. However, Sterling Bank has since confirmed that the initiative is real and effective immediately.

Speaking on the development, Obinna Ukachukwu, Growth Executive, Consumer and Business Banking Directorate, emphasized that the decision was based on values, not just finances.

“We believe access to your own money shouldn’t come with a penalty. This is more than a financial decision—it’s a values-based one. It reflects our commitment to making banking fair, inclusive, and truly customer-focused.”

Under the new policy, Sterling customers will no longer pay any fees for local transactions made via the bank’s mobile app, leading to significant savings for individuals and small business owners who rely on frequent transfers.

The announcement has sparked widespread public approval, with social media platforms buzzing over the development. On WhatsApp Nigeria, a viral message from a prayer group read:

“Please my good people, this is not a joke!!! Sterling Bank has just shocked Nigeria today o!! My neighbor Justina just transferred N100k and no charges!!! God bless Sterling Bank!!”

The move has also put pressure on other banks to reconsider their transfer fee policies, with industry analysts predicting that competitors may soon follow suit.

Sterling Bank has a history of customer-focused policies. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the bank stood out by providing supplementary payments to healthcare workers in public hospitals—demonstrating a commitment to social impact beyond profit-making.

“We’re not yet the biggest bank in Nigeria, but we’ve been the boldest,” Ukachukwu said. “Sterling fearlessly believes in the future of Nigeria, and this is us backing Nigerians with more than words.

With this move, Sterling Bank is redefining what it means to be a customer-first institution, prioritizing transparency, fairness, and financial empowerment for all Nigerians.

As other banks face mounting pressure to follow suit, this may mark the beginning of a new era in Nigerian banking—one where customers pay less and gain more.
