Police Mobile Force Withdraws Officers Attached to VIPs Ahead of National Protest

In preparation for the upcoming national protest, the Police Mobile Force has announced the temporary withdrawal of all mobile police officers attached to VIPs . This strategic move aims to ensure adequate security coverage during the anticipated nationwide demonstrations.

The decision was communicated through a memo signed by the Commanding Officer of the Police Mobile Force No. 2 Squadron, CSPORGN E. Moses. The memo, titled “Notification of Temporary Withdrawal of Personnel for National Assignment,” outlines the necessity of reallocating police personnel to bolster the operational capacity of the force in maintaining public order.

The memo reads in part, “In view of the planned nationwide protest, it becomes imperative to temporarily withdraw some of the personnel attached to you in order to muster sufficient officers to dominate the public space. This is part of the proactive necessary measures to enhance the operational capacity/capability of the squadron and your understanding in the above regard is highly solicited.”

The withdrawal of officers is expected to provide the Police Mobile Force with the manpower needed to manage and control the large crowds expected during the protests. This measure is seen as crucial to maintaining peace and preventing any potential escalation of violence.

The memo further emphasized the importance of this temporary reassignment, seeking the understanding and cooperation of the affected politicians and public officials. “Accept as usual the assurances of the esteemed regards of the Commanding Officer, please,” it concluded.

The planned nationwide protest, organized by various labor unions and civil society groups, is set to commence on August 1st. The protests aim to highlight the economic hardships faced by millions of Nigerians and to demand better living conditions and governance.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), one of the key organizers of the protest, has cited growing poverty, hunger, and unemployment as major issues driving the demonstrations. The NLC has urged the government to engage in dialogue and address the concerns of the populace.

As the nation braces for the protests, the withdrawal of police officers from VIPs’ security details underscores the gravity of the situation and the government’s commitment to ensuring public safety during the demonstrations. The effectiveness of this strategy in maintaining order while respecting the rights of citizens to protest will be closely watched in the coming days.
