DSS Apprehends Notorious Blogger Behind Fake Recruitment Websites, Online Scams
The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Sylvester Victor Augustus, a notorious blogger accused of cloning its official website and publishing fraudulent recruitment advertisements to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.
Augustus, 32, was apprehended on Thursday at his residence on Akpan Eno Lane, Abak, Akwa Ibom State, following an extensive investigation by the DSS. The suspect, who claims to be a graduate of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO), is alleged to have created a counterfeit version of the DSS website, using it to post fake recruitment notices that lured victims into his fraudulent schemes.
In a statement, the DSS condemned the fake recruitment activities and cautioned the public to remain vigilant against similar online scams. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to identifying and prosecuting cybercriminals who exploit digital platforms for blackmail, extortion, and other illicit activities.
Sources revealed that Augustus is part of a broader crackdown by the DSS on individuals operating fake websites and social media accounts for fraudulent purposes. Other suspects involved in similar scams are under investigation, with some already facing charges in courts nationwide.
The DSS urged Nigerians to verify information through official government channels and report suspicious online activities to relevant authorities to prevent further victimization.
