Sterling One Foundation Advances Education Through AI-Driven Interventions

As the global focus on technology’s role in education intensifies, the 2024 International Day of Education theme, “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,” highlights the need for inclusive, technology-driven learning systems. Nigeria faces significant educational challenges, with UNICEF estimating that the number of out-of-school children has risen to 18.3 million. This alarming figure underscores the urgency for targeted interventions to bridge systemic gaps and expand access to quality education.

Sterling One Foundation, committed to addressing these challenges, has directly and indirectly impacted over 20,000 individuals in 2024 through its strategic education programs. By integrating innovative teaching methodologies and STEM-focused tools, the Foundation is driving inclusive and equitable learning opportunities.

One of its flagship initiatives, the Early Child Learning Advancement Project (E-CLAP), has enhanced foundational literacy and numeracy skills for over 2,000 children in underserved communities across Kano, Lagos, Borno, and Oyo states. By combining modern teaching tools with active community engagement, the program has achieved measurable improvements in learning outcomes within just six months. Teachers were equipped with culturally relevant and interactive teaching techniques, ensuring sustained student engagement and motivation.

In the Northeast, where educational access remains a critical issue, Sterling One Foundation partnered with the Northeast Development Commission (NEDC) to implement the Accelerated Senior Secondary Education Programme (ASSEP). This initiative focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Agriculture (STEMA) to address systemic educational challenges. ASSEP has trained over 720 teachers through a combination of online and in-person modules while providing more than 15,000 students with STEM resources, virtual reality-enabled learning tools, and tailored preparatory materials for WAEC, NECO, and JAMB examinations.

Further aligning with this year’s education theme, the Foundation collaborated with CDIAL AI to launch the Indigenous Multilingual Digital Literacy & Artificial Intelligence Hub in Ajegunle, Lagos. This initiative equipped 174 learners with essential digital literacy skills, utilizing AI-powered tools in 13 indigenous African languages. By enabling learning in native tongues, the project has bridged educational gaps and fostered inclusivity in underserved communities.

Olapeju Ibekwe, CEO of Sterling One Foundation, emphasized the importance of responsible technology integration in education, stating:

“The theme, ‘AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation,’ highlights the need to balance technological advancement with inclusivity. At Sterling One Foundation, we believe that achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 requires a concerted effort to bridge systemic educational gaps. By empowering educators and students with innovative tools and fostering collaborations, we are working towards a future where quality education drives sustainable development and ensures no one is left behind.”

Sterling One Foundation’s success is anchored in strategic partnerships that facilitate scalable and sustainable solutions. As Nigeria and Africa strive toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, inclusive policies, innovative educational approaches, and collaborative efforts remain crucial in addressing systemic challenges and ensuring equitable access to quality education for all.
