Tinubu Sacks IGP Kayode Egbetokun, Appoints AIG Tunji Disu as Replacement

Tinubu Sacks Egbetokun, Appoints Tunji Disu as New IGPPresident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reportedly directed the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, paving the way for the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, as his successor.According to credible sources within the Presidency, Egbetokun was asked to step down during a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Monday evening. While the development is yet to be officially confirmed, preparations are reportedly underway for a formal handover ceremony between the outgoing police chief and his successor.Egbetokun was appointed as the 22nd Inspector-General of Police by President Tinubu on June 19, 2023. His appointment was later ratified by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.Appointed at the age of 58, he was expected to retire on September 4, 2024, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, his tenure witnessed a series of controversies, particularly allegations bordering on human rights concerns. As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency has not released an official statement confirming the development. Efforts to reach presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga and Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin were unsuccessful.A source within the Presidency, however, disclosed that an official announcement is expected later on Tuesday.Societal Concerns Media Network will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as more details emerge.
