Nigerian Army Warns Against Fake COAS Profiles Used for Online Scams

The Nigerian Army has raised an alarm over the activities of impostors falsely claiming to be the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, on social media. These fraudsters, using the COAS’s official portrait as profile pictures, have been deceiving unsuspecting individuals through online scams, including fraudulent virtual meetings.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, disclosed that cybercriminals have devised new methods to defraud the public. The latest trend involves setting up fake online meetings via Zoom, WhatsApp, and Facebook, where participants are required to share numbers displayed on their screens. The impostors then use these numbers to target individuals and extort money or sensitive information.

The Nigerian Army has identified multiple phone numbers frequently used by these fraudsters. While the list is extensive, the Army urges the public to refrain from engaging with any calls, messages, or virtual meetings that claim to be from the COAS unless verified through official channels.

The Nigerian Army has advised personnel and the general public to be vigilant against these fraudulent activities and to adhere strictly to official communication channels. Some key red flags to watch out for include:

– Fake Social Media Accounts – The COAS does not operate unofficial social media pages. Always verify accounts before engaging.

– Suspicious Requests – Be cautious of messages requesting financial assistance or personal details.

– Poor Grammar and Spelling – Fraudulent messages often contain grammatical errors, unlike official Army communications.

To report any suspicious numbers or fraudulent activities, individuals can contact the Nigerian Army through its toll-free call center at 193.

The Army has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of the public and urges everyone to remain cautious and avoid engaging in unauthorized online meetings, calls, or messages using the COAS’s identity. By staying informed and vigilant, Nigerians can help combat digital fraud and protect themselves from cybercriminals.
