Lagos State Taskforce Chairman, CSP Adetayo Akerele, Launches “See Something, Say Something” Campaign

Lagos, Nigeria — In an effort to combat environmental degradation and reinforce Lagos State’s status as a resilient metropolitan city under the THEMES Plus Agenda, CSP Adetayo Akerele, Chairman of the Lagos State Taskforce, has unveiled the “See Something, Say Something” campaign. The launch event took place today at the Taskforce headquarters, signaling a significant step towards enhanced community engagement and environmental vigilance.

The “See Something, Say Something” campaign is one of several initiatives planned by CSP Akerele to establish a feedback mechanism, allowing the public to report and update the Taskforce on incidents of concern within their communities. This initiative aims to bridge the communication gap between the Taskforce and the residents, fostering a collaborative approach to addressing issues such as environmental degradation, illegal street trading, and traffic violations.

CSP Akerele emphasized the importance of two-way communication in effective governance. “I belong to the school of thought which states that communication is a two-way thing – the encoder and the decoder. The task of stamping out illegalities such as environmental degradation, black spots, okada riders operating illegally, street trading, driving against traffic (One-way), causing obstruction on the Highway, blockage of streets and roads for social events and so on can only be achieved through whistleblowing mechanisms such as this. We can act when we get tip-offs from members of the public through this initiative,” he stated.

Having assumed office over the weekend, CSP Akerele expressed his determination to achieve his goals through collective effort. He urged the public and Taskforce staff to leverage this opportunity to restore order and sanity. “The internet and social media have made whistleblowing quite easy these days. You can send messages, pictures, or videos of any illegal activities within your area to our social media handles, and I assure you that you will be reached within the shortest possible time. Your identity will remain confidential for safety reasons, but I assure you that we will act upon it once we conclude our investigations,” he stated.

CSP Akerele also called on Taskforce personnel to perform their duties with professionalism and integrity, warning that any staff member found engaging in illegal activities would face sanctions. “There will be no sacred cows in this era, therefore I urge you all to carry out your assigned duties with a human face. We are all being watched, and if anyone is caught carrying out any illegal activity, he will be sanctioned according to the rule of engagement.”

Attaining a safe, serene, and habitable environment is a collective responsibility of you and I.”
