How RCCG Suspends Two Pastors Over Homosexuality Allegations, Launches Investigation
One of Nigeria’s largest Christian organizations, RCCG In response to allegations of homosexuality has announced the suspension of two of its ministers, Pastor Ayorinde AdeBello and Deacon Oke Mayowa. The decision was conveyed in an internal memo dated October 28, 2024, signed by RCCG’s National Overseer, Pastor Sunday Akande, and sent to the church’s administrative leadership.
Pastor Akande explained that the suspension is a temporary measure, allowing the church to carry out a thorough investigation. In the memo, he reaffirmed RCCG’s commitment to biblical principles, stating, “Our mission is deeply rooted in the teachings of the Bible, and we must address these allegations with the seriousness they deserve.”
Citing passages such as Leviticus 18:22, which describes same-sex relations as an “abomination,” and 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, which warns against certain behaviors, Pastor Akande emphasized that the church’s stance on homosexuality is derived from its interpretation of scripture. He noted that adherence to these teachings is central to RCCG’s mission and that any issues contrary to its beliefs would be addressed decisively.
To ensure due process, Pastor Akande directed the Special Assistant to the General Overseer to handle the investigation with confidentiality and respect for all parties. The church aims to complete the inquiry within two weeks, during which time Pastor AdeBello, Deacon Mayowa, and any others allegedly involved are to refrain from church activities.
“This is a matter of integrity and adherence to our values,” Pastor Akande stated, clarifying that the suspension is precautionary and will be reassessed once the investigation concludes.
