In a swift and strategic operation, the National Cybercrime Center Lagos Annex of the Nigerian Police Force has uncovered and apprehended a suspect accused of impersonating popular social media personality and entrepreneur, Simi Gold, in a high-profile case of cyber fraud and identity theft.

The suspect, whose identity is currently withheld pending full investigation, was tracked and arrested in Ilesha, Osun State after weeks of surveillance and digital tracing. The operation was executed with precision by cybercrime experts I. Lagos annex following multiple complaints from unsuspecting victims who had been defrauded under the false identity of the influencer.

According to preliminary findings, the impersonator had been operating across various online platforms, using Simi Gold’s image, brand name, and reputation to solicit funds and mislead followers with fraudulent schemes ranging from fake giveaways to false business partnerships.

Confirming the arrest, a senior officer from the Nigeria Cybersecurity unit stated:

“The suspect had created multiple social media accounts and cloned the digital presence of the victim. It took a combination of advanced cyber intelligence and digital tracking to locate and arrest him. He has since been moved to Lagos for further interrogation and prosecution.”

This incident highlights the growing challenge of digital impersonation and underscores the Nigerian Police Force’s intensified crackdown on cybercriminals. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant, verify identities online, and report suspicious activities promptly.
