The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election was nearly derailed by challenges stemming from the actions of the previous administration.
Speaking during a candid media chat in Abuja on Friday, Wike expressed concerns over key policies implemented in the lead-up to the election, particularly the fuel scarcity and naira redesign, which he said created widespread hardship and uncertainty across the country.
According to the FCT Minister, the twin crises made the electoral race significantly difficult for Tinubu and threatened to undermine his chances at the polls.
“Let the truth be told — the fuel crisis and naira redesign policy didn’t favour our candidate. People were angry, and life was very tough for the masses during that period. It almost cost us the election,” Wike stated.
He emphasized that the victory was not a product of chance, but a testament to Tinubu’s political resilience, strategic planning, and the backing of influential allies across the country.
“What happened was not luck — it was experience, strategy, and leadership. Tinubu survived the storm when many thought it was over,” Wike added.
The former Rivers State governor, who played a crucial role in the 2023 electoral cycle, also projected a stable and long-lasting administration, declaring confidently that President Tinubu would remain in office until 2031.
“Nothing will change that. I believe in his leadership and what he’s doing to move Nigeria forward,” he affirmed.
Wike’s remarks come amid growing discussions about the current administration’s performance, as Nigerians continue to assess the impacts of reforms and policies introduced since Tinubu assumed office.
