Oyo Stakeholders Call for Speedy Passage of National Digital Economy, E-Governance Bill

The nationwide consultative meeting on the National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill took place in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, with key stakeholders and government representatives advocating for the swift passage of the bill to enhance governance and accountability in Nigeria.  

The meeting, attended by representatives of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy and the Oyo State government, emphasized the importance of the bill as a transformative tool for boosting Nigeria’s digital economy and fostering government-citizen engagement.  

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, represented by Banke Ajagunna, highlighted the bill’s potential to propel Nigeria into the digital age. He stressed that the bill would drive economic growth, modernize public services, and establish Nigeria as a leader in Africa’s digital landscape.  

According to him, the bill introduces a regulatory framework to support digital commerce, cross-border trade, and innovation while ensuring equitable access to digital services across all regions of the country.  

“It will facilitate the digital transformation of government services, making them more transparent, accessible, and responsive to citizens. This is a critical step in our journey towards becoming a smart nation,” he stated.  

Dr. Tijani urged Nigerians and the National Assembly to rally behind the bill, describing it as a cornerstone for Nigeria’s digital transformation.  

Speaking on behalf of the Oyo State government, the Senior Special Assistant on ICT and E-Governance to the Governor, Mr. Bayo Akande, commended the Federal Government for proposing the bill. He described it as a timely intervention that would help Nigeria bridge gaps in its digital economy.  

According to Akande, “Despite advances in technology, Nigeria lags behind nations with robust e-governance frameworks that empower citizens and protect consumer data. Without intervention, we risk losing vital economic opportunities in an increasingly digital world.”  

He also noted Oyo State’s strides in digital governance, citing the deployment of Business Process Automation to reduce paperwork in government operations as a proactive step.  

The consultative session provided an opportunity for stakeholders, including tech ecosystem leaders, to contribute their insights on the bill. They agreed that its passage would unlock new opportunities for businesses to innovate, expand digital infrastructure, and improve governance through e-governance initiatives.  

The proposed bill also seeks to create export-oriented capacities, support international digital trade, and provide a robust legal framework for Nigeria’s digital economy.  

Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, described the consultative meeting as a vital step toward aligning Nigeria’s governance with global digital standards.  

He emphasized that the passage of the bill would not only transform governance but also enhance economic development and ensure digital inclusivity across all regions.  

The meeting concluded with a unanimous call for prompt action by the National Assembly to pass the National Digital Economy and E-Governance Bill, paving the way for a digitally empowered Nigeria.
