Police Deny Sealing NLC Office, Ensure Security for Peaceful Protest

Contrary to circulating reports alleging that the Nigeria Police had sealed off the National Labour Congress NLC subheadquarters in Yaba, Lagos, the Police Public Relations Officer PRO has debunked the claims, clarifying the actual events that unfolded at the location.

According to the Police PRO, the presence of law enforcement officers at the NLC office was proactive and aimed at ensuring the safety and security of Civil Society Organizations CSOs intending to embark on a procession. The objective was to prevent any potential disruption or hijacking of the protest by hoodlums, thereby maintaining public order and safety.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Adegoke Fayoade, personally addressed the protesters before their procession commenced, demonstrating a commitment to dialogue and peaceful coexistence. CP Fayoade’s presence served to reassure both protesters and law enforcement personnel, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding.

Since the commencement of the procession, there have been no reported incidents of violence or disruption. The police presence has been instrumental in maintaining peace and facilitating the orderly conduct of the protest.

A recent image circulating online purportedly showing CP Fayoade addressing a joint security team further corroborates the Police’s proactive stance in ensuring professionalism and diligence in their duties. The Commissioner’s charge to the security personnel emphasizes the importance of being firm yet courteous in maintaining law and order.

In light of these developments, the narrative of the Police sealing off the NLC office has been clarified, with the focus shifting to the collaborative efforts between law enforcement agencies and civil society in upholding democratic rights while ensuring public safety.

As discussions surrounding protests and public demonstrations continue to unfold, the role of law enforcement in safeguarding citizens’ rights and maintaining peace remains paramount. The Police’s proactive engagement and commitment to professionalism set a positive precedent for future interactions between authorities and the public during such events.
