Federal Government and NLC Reach Agreement to Suspend Nationwide Strike
After a day-long meeting, the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC have reached a resolution to suspend the nationwide strike that began earlier today. The strike was initiated by the NLC to demand a new National Minimum Wage.
The high-stakes meeting, held in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, saw intense negotiations between government officials and representatives of the NLC. This intervention followed an earlier mediation attempt by the National Assembly on June 2, 2024, which had failed to prevent the strike.
During the meeting, both parties engaged in exhaustive deliberations and finally arrived at a set of resolutions aimed at addressing the concerns of the labour force. Key among the resolutions is the President’s commitment to a National Minimum Wage higher than N60,000.
To further this commitment, a Tripartite Committee, including representatives from the government, labour unions, and the private sector, has been tasked to meet daily over the next week. Their goal is to finalize an agreeable National Minimum Wage that reflects the economic realities of Nigeria and meets the expectations of the workers.
In recognition of the President’s commitment and the progress made during the negotiations, the NLC agreed to suspend the strike action. This decision is intended to allow the Tripartite Committee the necessary time to conclude their discussions and reach a fair and sustainable wage agreement.
The NLC’s decision to suspend the strike is a temporary measure, contingent upon the ongoing good faith negotiations and the swift resolution of the wage dispute.
The government and the NLC expressed optimism that the forthcoming meetings would yield a positive outcome, benefiting both the workforce and the broader economy. Both parties reiterated their dedication to working collaboratively towards achieving a fair and just wage system in Nigeria.
