The Lagos State Government has expressed deep regret over the devastating gas tanker explosion that occurred on Tuesday night, March 11, 2025, at the Otedola Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, resulting in widespread damage to properties and loss of lives.
In a statement released by the government, it acknowledged the tragic incident and extended its sympathies to those affected, commending the swift response of emergency services, including firefighters, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and other first responders who worked tirelessly to contain the fire and manage the aftermath.
“This incident reinforces the urgent need for stricter safety protocols for heavy-duty vehicles,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with those who have suffered losses, and we remain committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property across Lagos.”
Preliminary reports confirmed that the explosion happened when an articulated gas tanker lost control while ascending the link road to the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, causing it to somersault and spill its highly flammable contents, which ignited almost immediately.
According to emergency responders, the inferno destroyed at least 15 vehicles, four buildings, and several shops, with two confirmed deaths so far and an unspecified number of injured victims rushed to nearby hospitals. A private hospital in the area was also affected, though the extent of casualties there remains unclear.
In response, the Ministry of Transportation has announced plans to intensify enforcement on the movement of hazardous materials across the state. The government vowed to strengthen regulatory compliance for haulage vehicles and implement enhanced safety measures to prevent similar tragedies.
“We call on all transport operators to uphold the highest safety standards and fully cooperate with the government’s efforts to safeguard lives and property,” the statement added.
The Lagos State Government reassured residents of its commitment to building a safer, more resilient transport system and urged the public to remain vigilant, report unsafe practices, and support ongoing efforts to enhance road safety.
As investigations into the cause of the accident continue, the government promised to provide further updates and hold all parties accountable to prevent future occurrences.
