HOW FEMALE LAWYERS IN POLITICS BACK HON. MOJISOLA MERANDA, URGE OBASA TO EMBRACE DEMOCRATIC TRANSITION

Amidst the ongoing political tensions in the Lagos State House of Assembly, the Female Lawyers in Politics have thrown their weight behind Hon. Mojisola Meranda, the newly elected first female Speaker of the legislative arm, calling for adherence to constitutional principles, democratic ethics, and political stability.

Addressing the crisis, the group, led by its president, Abimbola Badia, emphasized that change is an inevitable cornerstone of democracy and must be accepted in good faith. They urged the former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, to uphold the rule of law and democratic values by accepting the outcome of the House leadership transition with the spirit of sportsmanship.

Abimbola Badia noted that Lagos State has long enjoyed political stability and legislative order, and any attempt to disrupt this equilibrium would be against the spirit of governance and the doctrine of necessity. She highlighted that Hon. Meranda’s emergence is historic as she becomes the first female Speaker in the state’s legislative history, making her ascension a symbol of progress, gender inclusivity, and legal evolution in Nigerian politics.

“We stand firmly in solidarity with Hon. Mojisola Meranda and her leadership. This is a defining moment for women in governance, and as legal practitioners, we recognize the importance of institutional continuity and respect for democratic outcomes,” Abimbola stated.

The group also commended the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for its role in nurturing Meranda’s political growth, stressing that preparation meets opportunity and that her rise to leadership is a product of years of political tutelage and competence.

Further reinforcing their stance, Abimbola Badia emphasized that Hon. Meranda is a product of strong political mentorship, having been actively involved in party activities since the era of the Alliance for Democracy (AD) through the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and now the APC. Additionally, she comes from a lineage of leadership, being the daughter of a renowned Lagos High Chief and former legislator, a pedigree that further solidifies her ability to steer the House towards legislative excellence and harmony.

“As a matter of fact, women are known for their ability to build and unify any system. When allowed to concentrate on the task ahead, I have no doubt that Hon. Meranda’s leadership will elevate the Lagos State House of Assembly to new heights of harmony and effectiveness,” Badia stated.

Reaffirming their position, the Female Lawyers in Politics urged all political actors to uphold constitutional supremacy, legislative independence, and the will of the House to ensure that Lagos State continues to thrive under the principles of equity, justice, and fair representation.

As legal professionals and stakeholders in governance, the group reiterated their commitment to defending institutional integrity, political harmony, and the sanctity of legislative processes, emphasizing that gender should never be a barrier to leadership in a democratic society.
